Finansavisen, Norway: Cognizant’s Country Client Partner, Norway, Says Self-Driving Cars Need Intelligent Transport Systems in Place

“As our cities’ roads become increasingly crowded, congested and polluted, there will be a growing need to improve our urban mobility,” says Matthias Peter. “Self-driving cars could be a part of the solution to reduce urban traffic in the most congested cities. It is believed that driverless cars will lower the number of traffic accidents, and reduce air and noise pollution in coming years.” Excerpts:

“This shift will make way for the rise of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has signaled its intent to use ITS to combat congestion in our larger cities and recognizes the need for more expertise on smart infrastructure in order to make it efficient and useful.

To pave the way for more ITS in Norwegian cities, urban infrastructure should get upgraded with sensors and IoT devices, and be utilized to reduce both traffic and pollution.

Construction companies now have the opportunity to use solid analytics and device visualizations, which can help reveal patterns and create insightful solutions that will lead to more intelligently-operated cities and communities.

Simply deploying sensors and IoT solutions will not be enough; tapping into and contributing to the ITS ecosystem requires a flexible IT and data infrastructure that supports integration with third-party data sources, agile development, and rapid service deployment.

Self-driving cars and ITS may still be ramping up in momentum. Yet, they will dramatically affect the way we design and build our urban infrastructure in Norway in the future.

If construction companies manage to harness the right technology now, they will ensure that they are open to the vast opportunities that lie ahead.”
