Snohomish County PUD selects Cognizant to lead SAP S/4 HANA transformation to modernize utility operations

Cognizant will migrate PUD’s SAP platform to a cloud solution, strengthening resilience, customer experience and longterm readiness

TEANECK, N.J., May 13, 2026 – Cognizant (Nasdaq: CTSH), a leading AI builder and technology services provider, announced a collaboration with Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD), a public utility in the state of Washington providing electric and water services to more than 880,000 people living in Snohomish County and Camano Island. The collaboration aims to modernize the PUD’s SAP landscape, strengthen its regulatory compliance and establish a resilient, future‑ready enterprise platform.

Cognizant is expected to migrate the PUD’s SAP on‑premise environment to SAP’s cloud platform, implement Cognizant’s Finance4U SAP S/4 HANA‑certified Asset Lifecycle Accounting solution and deploy SAP mobility capabilities to support field and warehouse operations. The program consolidates three strategic transformation initiatives including SAP modernization with a brownfield migration, the implementation of an Asset Lifecyle Accounting solution powered by Finance4U and the deployment of a Mobility solution, under a single systems integrator simplifying delivery, mitigating risk and accelerating the realization of business value.

The PUD is initiating this modernization ahead of SAP support ending for key legacy modules in 2027. Following a detailed assessment of operational, regulatory and long‑term investment needs, the PUD determined that an early move to SAP’s cloud environment would best support reliability, compliance and service continuity. Cognizant brings proven SAP S/4 HANA migration expertise in the utilities sector to help modernize core systems while helping to reduce risk and strengthening long‑term resilience.

“This initiative marks an important step in ensuring our SAP platform remains reliable, compliant and positioned for the future,” said Kristi Sterling, Chief Information Officer for Snohomish County PUD. “Cognizant demonstrated a strong understanding of our business, regulatory environment and transformation goals, and stood out with an approach that minimizes risk while positioning us for long-term operational success.”

SAP S/4 HANA migrations can be a challenge due to legacy complexity, regulatory demands and limited internal capacity. Cognizant leverages deep utility industry expertise, proven SAP S/4 HANA accelerators, embedded compliance functionality based on client requirements and a disciplined delivery model focused on predictable outcomes to guide utilities like the PUD.

Following a comprehensive evaluation, the PUD selected Cognizant as systems integrator for SAP S/4 HANA RISE, Asset Lifecycle Accounting and Mobility, recognizing Cognizant as the top vendor to meet the full scope and deliver a clear Minimum Viable Product (MVP) strategy that aims to drive early value while reducing risk, complexity and long‑term maintenance.

“Utilities are under increasing pressure to modernize core systems while maintaining reliability, compliance and cost discipline,” said Vijay Narayan, Executive Vice President and Head of Manufacturing, Logistics, Energy & Utilities Business Unit at Cognizant. “This engagement reinforces Cognizant’s position as a trusted partner for utility organizations undertaking complex SAP S/4 HANA transformations and a leader in partnering with SAP to spearhead secure and proprietary agentic and physical AI solutions. We are proud to support the PUD in building a modern, resilient platform that will serve its customers and communities.”

This partnership builds on the legacy relationship between the PUD and Utegration, which was acquired by Cognizant in 2023. Utegration collaborated with the PUD on its Connect Up advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) program.
