Which 50, Australia: Cognizant’s Head of Products and Resources in ANZ Says Connectivity is Impacting the Way Profits are Distributed in the Automotive Industry

“In the near future, select truck drivers in Sydney will be told a green light is about to change and if they are close enough, they will have the option to request an extension for a few extra seconds they need to pass through without slowing,” says Gaurav Sharma, discussing how connected cars are turning into points of sale.

Connectivity is having an impact on the way profits are distributed in the automotive industry, he says. “The mobile phone industry, for example, has seen a significant redistribution of profits from hardware to software during the transition of feature phones to smartphones. In a similar way, the automotive industry will see a significant redistribution of value as the technology needed to connect cars to their environment becomes one of the most valuable components of the car.”

For V2I projects to succeed governments, businesses and retailers need to collaborate to build the required infrastructure, from concept, to design and through to implementation, Sharma says. “This includes partnerships and alliances with hardware manufacturers, telecom providers, retailers and even large infrastructure projects.”

“The possible sharing with other wireless users of the radio-frequency spectrum used by V2I communications might adversely affect V2I technologies’ performance and managing data security and addressing public perceptions related to privacy,” Sharma says.
