PharmaVOICE, US: Cognizant Life Sciences Leaders Discuss Top Trends for 2018

PharmaVOICE recently published their 2018 Year in Preview, identifying the top 10 trends for the year ahead. Among them, the publication anticipates that both Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Health Technology will have meaningful impact next year.

While AI will assuredly transform the healthcare landscape, Pratik Maroo, Chief Digital Officer, Cognizant Life Sciences, cautions that investments must be made carefully. “The industry is awash with AI initiatives: interest in cognitive computing, deep learning, conversational AI, and machine learning is growing,” he says. “We see 80% of our clients investing in AI. Yet, very few have been able to demonstrate ROI.”

Maroo believes near-term ROI will be best realized through improve R&D yield, increased message recall and customer experience, and increased transparency in the supply chain. “Identifying the right business need for AI will help companies realize near-term ROI while laying a foundation for broader deployment as the technology advances.”

Meanwhile, virtual health technology also continues to evolve. With its increasing popularity, wearable technology continues to be a trend in virtual health. However, Rick Cavieres, VP, Life Sciences Consulting Global Leader, notes, “Wearables will be the industry’s betamax if this data are not properly integrated and aggregated with contextual data such as the patient’s diet and quantitative data such as EMRs and genetic profile data such as 23andME.”
